The Black Dahlia Murder

77 years ago on January 15, the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short, nicknamed the Black Dahlia by the media, was found on a sidewalk in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. This sensational crime captivated the nation and remains unsolved to this day. The Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI investigated over 150 suspects, anonymous letters, and 60 false confessions but were never able to make headway in the case. The FBI still maintains an official webpage dedicated to the mystery of the Black Dahlia, and concedes that this murder may never be solved. #blackdahlia #blackdahliamurder #truecrime #mystery #unsolvedmystery #unsolvedcasefiles #unsolvedmysteries #thisdayinhistory #vintage

Social media caption sample for Apple 1984 ad by PKM Design

Apple’s Iconic “1984” Ad

On January 22, 1984, Apple aired its iconic “1984” ad during Super Bowl XVIII. Directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, 1982) and created by agency Chiat-Day, the ad broke all the rules with its dystopian theme and deliberate omission of computer imagery. The “1984” commercial was wildly successful at generating interest in Apple and heralded a new era of Super Bowl ads in which advertisers showcased experimental and unconventional commercials. Advertising Age magazine ranks “1984” at the top of their 50 Greatest Commercials list, and the Clio Awards for innovation in advertising has placed the ad in their Hall of Fame.  #OnThisDay #onthisdayinhistory  #apple #applecomputer #1984 #vintage  #advertising

Social media caption sample for Pluto by PKM Design

The Discovery of Pluto

On February 18, 1930, American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh made a groundbreaking discovery while conducting a systematic search for a ninth planet beyond Neptune. He spotted a faint point of light moving against the backdrop of stars, eventually confirming the existence of a new celestial body. Named Pluto after the Roman god of the underworld, its discovery captured the public’s imagination and marked a significant milestone in astronomy. However, as scientific knowledge advanced, Pluto’s classification underwent revisions. Initially considered the ninth planet in our solar system, its status was redefined in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union, which reclassified Pluto as a “dwarf planet.” Despite this reclassification, Pluto remains a subject of fascination and study, with missions like NASA’s New Horizons providing unprecedented insights into this distant world and its complex history.  #NASA #nasa #pluto #space #ThisDay  #ThisDayinHistory #vintage

Social media caption sample for the Golden Rocket ad by PKM Design

The Luxury Train That Never Was

The Golden Rocket, a legendary train that never entered service, holds a mystique within the annals of railroad history. Conceived by the Rock Island and Southern Pacific Railroads in the 1940s, the Golden Rocket was envisioned as a luxurious streamliner connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. It was designed to epitomize the pinnacle of modern rail travel, featuring sleek Art Deco styling, lavish accommodations, and cutting-edge amenities. However, despite the grand plans and elaborate promotional campaigns, the Golden Rocket never saw a single day of service. Financial constraints, logistical challenges, and changing priorities ultimately led to its cancellation before it could ever grace the tracks. Nevertheless, the Golden Rocket endures as a symbol of the ambitious aspirations and romantic allure associated with the golden age of American railroads. #TravelTuesday #travel #travelhistory #goldenrocket #railroad #trains #vintage

Spooky Season in Japan

Did you know that August is “spooky month” in Japan? During hot weather, Japanese folklore says that spirits are more likely to cross over into the world of the living. O-bon, the Buddhist festival of the dead, is celebrated in August for this reason. By paying respect to the dead during the festival, families’ loved ones are more peacefully able to pass into the next world. Scary stories, horror movies and other spooky activities also create “chills” which help people get through one of the hottest months of the year! If you’re interested in seeing some beautiful Japanese woodblock prints honoring the supernatural this month, check out our new 2024 Vintage Spirits, Demons & Warriors calendar, link in bio. #spooky #august #JapaneseCulture #2024calendar #planner #asgardpress

Social media post featuring astronaut John Glenn by PKM Design

#ThisDayInHistory

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn etched his name into the annals of space exploration by becoming the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. Carried aloft by an Atlas rocket, Glenn embarked on a historic journey that would captivate the world. During his three orbits around the Earth, Glenn experienced weightlessness and observed a breathtaking view of the planet below. His mission was not without peril, as he encountered technical malfunctions and faced the uncertainty of re-entry. Yet, Glenn’s courage and composure prevailed, and he safely splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean, hailed as a national hero. His pioneering flight on Friendship 7 not only showcased American ingenuity and determination in the space race but also inspired generations to reach for the stars in pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
